Liverpool appoints Andoni Iraola as manager after Arne Slot dismissal

Arne Slot was dismissed by Liverpool in June 2026 following a disappointing second season in which the defending champions fell to fifth place and suffered early cup exits and a Champions League loss. Reports highlighted strained relationships with senior players, including Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander‑Arnold and Darwin Núñez, who publicly criticised Slot’s handling of the squad.

The club quickly appointed former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola on a two‑year contract. Iraola, 43, brought a high‑pressing style to Bournemouth, guiding them to a sixth‑place finish and Europa League qualification. Senior Liverpool players expressed excitement about his arrival, noting a fresh start and renewed optimism in the dressing‑room.

Iraola’s early transfer agenda includes targeting three young stars: Brazilian forward Rayan from Bournemouth, striker Eli Junior Kroupi (linked with Arsenal and Manchester City), and Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who is also pursued by PSG. These moves aim to rebuild the squad after the departure of Mohamed Salah and other departures under Slot.
