Liverpool City Council AI pool cameras face privacy concerns

Liverpool City Council in Sydney has implemented artificial intelligence-powered computer vision technology to monitor swimmers in real time. The system, which uses cameras to detect individuals in distress and alert lifeguards, is intended to provide an extra layer of safety in swimming pools.

However, legal experts have raised concerns that the technology may breach the Surveillance Devices Act 2007 (NSW). Avinash Singh, a principal lawyer at Astor Legal, noted that while the cameras are intended for safety, the use of AI to track people within a location may violate restrictions on tracking technology. Singh argued that the council may need to obtain explicit consent from citizens, noting that existing CCTV signage does not specifically mention the use of tracking technology.

Similar AI monitoring trials and implementations have occurred in other parts of Australia, including Newcastle and Perth, often utilizing systems from Lynxight AI to assist in drowning prevention.
