South African woman sentenced to 25 years for heroin smuggling in Nigeria

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Will Jessica Ann, a 38-year-old South African national, to 25 years in prison for smuggling 5.75 kilograms of heroin into Nigeria. The sentence follows her guilty plea to charges of importation and conspiracy to import the illicit substance.

Ann was intercepted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on July 6, 2026, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. She had arrived on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha, traveling with her three-year-old son. Authorities discovered 14 large blocks of heroin concealed in two checked-in bags. Although Ann initially denied having checked luggage, investigators matched baggage tags to her passport.

Intelligence suggests Ann is part of a transnational drug trafficking organization operating between Cambodia and South Africa. Her partner, Jan Coenraad De Jager, was reportedly arrested in Johannesburg on July 27, 2026, while attempting to traffic drugs to Hong Kong. Justice Obiora Egwuatu delivered the judgment, noting that the law is not influenced by emotions despite Ann’s pleas for leniency.
