Liverpool FC’s original ‘This Is Anfield’ sign sells at auction

The original ‘This Is Anfield’ sign, a historic piece of Liverpool Football Club memorabilia, has sold at auction for approximately £115,000 (roughly €175,000 including commissions and VAT). The sale price significantly exceeded the initial guide price of £15,000.

First installed at Anfield in 1972 by legendary manager Bill Shankly, the sign was intended to remind players of their responsibilities and to intimidate opposing teams. After being removed from the stadium, the sign was gifted to former youth player Ron Wilson by Roy Evans. Wilson subsequently displayed the sign at the Rutland Hotel in Douglas on the Isle of Man for several decades.

Auctioneers Budds confirmed the sign's authenticity by identifying distinctive cracks and paint marks through historical photographic comparison. The winning bidder is reported to be a British private individual.
