Michael Edwards departs Liverpool amid executive reshuffle

Michael Edwards, chief executive of football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has left his role overseeing Liverpool after two years of a three‑year contract. FSG said his exit is part of a “planned transition” following the completion of key strategic priorities, while President Mike Gordon expressed disappointment. Edwards returned to the club in March 2024 to guide the post‑Jürgen Klopp transition, helped secure the 2024‑25 Premier League title and was instrumental in signings such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mané. His departure is linked to frustration over FSG abandoning a multi‑club acquisition model that he had been tasked to develop.

The timing coincides with Liverpool’s summer transfer window and the upcoming replacement of Salah, as well as speculation that sporting director Richard Hughes may also leave for Saudi club Al‑Hilal. New head coach Andoni Iraola will inherit a squad in flux while the club evaluates internal candidates such as David Woodfine or Julian Ward to fill the executive vacuum. The reshuffle adds uncertainty to Liverpool’s strategic direction ahead of the new season.
