Liverpool house where Paul McCartney learned guitar up for auction

The childhood home where Sir Paul McCartney first learned to play the guitar is being put up for auction in Liverpool. Located at 43 Elswick Street in the Dingle area, the two-bedroom mid-terrace property was the former residence of McCartney’s childhood friend, Ian James.

McCartney has previously documented the significance of the location, noting in a letter that the house was where he first held a guitar and learned his initial chords. The connection is further highlighted by the fact that the guitar used at the house was sold for £330,000 in 2006 with written provenance provided by the musician.

Omega Auctions, a Merseyside-based specialist, is handling the sale with an estimated price between £150,000 and £170,000. The auction house has a history of selling properties linked to The Beatles, including homes associated with John Lennon and George Harrison.
