Ronald Araújo joins Liverpool on loan from Barcelona

Liverpool has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to sign defender Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan. The deal, which includes an option to purchase the 27-year-old Uruguayan international for approximately €55 million at the end of the season, aims to address a defensive crisis at Anfield caused by injuries to Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, and the departure of Ibrahima Konaté.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has approved the move, viewing it as a way to manage the squad and potentially free up wages to pursue other targets, such as Manchester City midfielder Rodri. To fill the void left by Araújo, Barcelona is looking toward young talent Álvaro Cortés.

Separately, Liverpool's pre-season preparations have faced challenges. Under new manager Andoni Iraola, the team suffered a 3-2 defeat to Monaco after squandering a two-goal lead. Iraola noted that the squad currently lacks the fitness to maintain intensity for a full 90 minutes. Additionally, Curtis Jones missed the match due to a hip issue, though the injury is not considered serious.
