Liverpool and Manchester United compete for Wolves midfielder João Gomes

Both Liverpool and Manchester United have opened formal talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Brazilian midfielder João Gomes after his planned move to Atlético Madrid collapsed. The 25‑year‑old, valued at roughly £38 million (€45 million), became available when Atlético withdrew from a €45 million deal reportedly hampered by agent Jorge Mendes.

Wolves' relegation to the Championship has prompted the club to consider offers, and both English giants have contacted the club to discuss price and payment structures. Manchester United recently abandoned a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after medical concerns and have already secured Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos for about £50 million, leaving Gomes as a potential midfield replacement.

Liverpool, under new manager Andoni Iraola, are also seeking a holding midfielder to strengthen a midfield that struggled during the 2025/26 season. Club owners Fenway Sports Group have reportedly made contact to pre‑empt United’s pursuit. A report quoted Globo Esporte: “Manchester United give up on Ederson and signal interest in Joao Gomes; Liverpool also make contact.”

Gomes has expressed a long‑standing desire to play for Liverpool, stating “Liverpool is a team I would play for.” The outcome of the negotiations could shape the midfield composition of both clubs ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
