Livestock diseases reported in Spain and warnings issued in the US
In Spain, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has reported new outbreaks of several diseases affecting livestock. In Catalonia, nine new cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) have been confirmed in wild boar, bringing the total to 73 outbreaks and 409 infected animals in the region. In Extremadura, two new outbreaks of Bluetongue disease were identified in sheep farms in Cáceres and Badajoz. Additionally, a secondary outbreak of Bovine Brucellosis was reported in a meat production farm in Alburquerque, Badajoz, leading to the immobilization and emptying of the facility.
In Cantabria, the Shamonda virus has been detected at a dairy farm in Riotuerto, with similar cases appearing in Ávila and Madrid. While the virus can affect sheep, goats, and horses, symptoms such as fever and diarrhea are primarily observed in dairy cows.
Separately, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued warnings regarding the potential arrival of African Swine Fever in the US. Although the disease is not transmissible to humans, officials warn it could cause devastating economic consequences, including the suspension of pork exports and a potential 50% drop in pig prices.
