Livestock industry focuses on consistency and methane reduction in Australia and New Zealand
In Australia, industry leaders at the Texas Angus “Nothin’ But Beef” event emphasized that consistency is the primary driver of success in cattle feedlots. Representatives from NH Foods, including managers from the Whyalla Feedlot and Oakey Beef Exports, highlighted that proper weaning practices are essential for performance. NH Foods noted they would not purchase cattle that had not undergone an adequate weaning program, as mathematically proven data shows properly weaned cattle are in better condition for feedlots.
In New Zealand, a new four-year research program called “Cool Beef” has been launched to improve beef production efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Led by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (BLNZ) and funded by the Ag Emissions Centre, the project will evaluate the feed consumption and methane emissions of at least 2,000 beef cattle, including Angus and Hereford breeds. The goal is to use scientific data to develop Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) that help farmers select cattle that are both highly productive and more efficient in terms of methane output.
