Livestock losses reported near Mount Lawu in Karanganyar

Five goats belonging to residents of Tengklik Village, Tawangmangu, Karanganyar, were reported dead or missing on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Local officials suspect the livestock may have been attacked by wild animals descending from the Mount Lawu area.

Three goats were found dead in their pens with bite marks on their necks, while one goat is missing and presumed taken by a predator. The village head, Paidin, noted that the incidents occurred at two nearby locations. While there is local suspicion that a leopard may be responsible, the exact species has not been confirmed.

The Central Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has prepared a team to monitor the situation and respond if wildlife needs to be secured or evacuated. BKSDA officials noted that while animals such as leopards, porcupines, and long-tailed macaques inhabit the area, they are awaiting field identification before taking action.

Authorities have advised local farmers to strengthen livestock pens and increase lighting around animal enclosures to mitigate risks. BKSDA also urged the community to avoid spreading unconfirmed information regarding the identity of the predator to prevent unnecessary panic.
