Living Shoreline technologies advance coastal habitat restoration
Living Shoreline Solutions has introduced the Oyster WAD, a patent-pending living breakwater designed for low-energy coastal environments. This reinforced-concrete structure aims to combine shoreline stabilization and sediment retention with marine habitat restoration. Unlike traditional seawalls that reflect wave energy, the Oyster WAD is engineered to attenuate wave energy, creating calmer conditions that allow oysters and other marine organisms to thrive.
In related research, academics from Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi have developed a small-scale wave tank to demonstrate the efficacy of living shorelines. This interactive tool is intended for extension and outreach, allowing users to visually compare the wave energy reduction and aesthetic differences between natural, living, and hardened shoreline structures.
