Livno’s Festival bakri revives traditional pottery in Donje Rujane

The second edition of the Festival bakri was held in Donje Rujane near Livno, organized by the Udruženje građana Donjih Rujana i Čaprazlija as part of the Livanjski kulturni ljet. The festival centered on the bakra, a traditional clay pot made in the area for almost two centuries, a craft that disappeared about fifteen years ago after the last local potter died. Organisers said, “Posebno nas raduje što je nakon prošlogodišnje radionice jedan od naših mještana odlučio naučiti izrađivati bakre,” highlighting the goal of passing the skill to younger generations.

Visitors watched live demonstrations of bakra production and were shown other historic crafts such as wooden spoons, bowls, and woven wool. Traditional foods—including pura, kiselo mlijeko, čorba, uštipci and pies—were served, and activities for children featured games and horse riding. The event received backing from the Turistička zajednica Grada Livna, which added the festival to the town’s cultural summer program, underscoring the community’s effort to preserve and promote its heritage.
