Livorno authorities investigate unauthorized mosques
Authorities in Livorno are investigating reports of properties being used as unauthorized mosques. During a provincial committee meeting for order and security, Prefect Giancarlo Dionisi stated that while freedom of worship is guaranteed for all, it must be exercised in regular and safe locations. He requested clear documentation to determine if properties officially designated for commercial, cultural, or artisanal use are instead being used for stable and organized collective prayer.
If irregularities regarding urban planning, administrative, or building regulations are confirmed, the municipality will be responsible for taking action. Dionisi emphasized that these issues involve legality and can impact public order and security, noting that police will continue to monitor the situation.
Susanna Ceccardi, a Member of the European Parliament for the Lega party, has called for the immediate closure of any such locations if they are found to be non-compliant with the law. She urged the Mayor of Livorno, Salvetti, to fulfill his duty by verifying the status of these buildings and ensuring that rules are applied equally to all religious sites.
