Rome judges deliberate on Giulio Regeni murder trial

Judges at the First Court of Assize in Rome are entering deliberations to issue a verdict in the case of the kidnapping and murder of Giulio Regeni. The trial involves four Egyptian intelligence officers who were identified by Italian investigators following the discovery of the researcher's body in 2016.

The defendants, who are absent from the proceedings, include General Tariq Sabir, Colonels Uhsam Helmi and Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim, and Major Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif. Prosecutors have requested life imprisonment for one defendant and 17.5-year sentences for the others. The charges include aggravated kidnapping, aggravated personal injury, and aggravated homicide.

Separately, in Livorno, eleven members of a Sardinian gang have been convicted for a high-profile armored car robbery near San Vincenzo. The group, which stole approximately 3 million euros in March 2025, received sentences ranging from 6 to 10 years in prison following an investigation known as Operation Drago.
