Livorno Hospital performs dual diagnostic biopsies in single sedation

Specialist teams at the hospital in Livorno have successfully performed two distinct diagnostic procedures during a single sedation session to accelerate the diagnosis of a complex oncological disease. This multidisciplinary approach involved the integration of interventional pulmonology and digestive endoscopy.

During the procedure, medical staff used Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) to perform an ultrasound-guided biopsy of a lymph node through the respiratory tract, followed by Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) to sample an adrenal lesion through the esophagus. By combining these methods, the medical team was able to obtain samples from different sites in rapid succession, avoiding the stress and risks associated with a second sedation for the patient.

The operation required close collaboration between pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, pathologists, and nursing staff. Hospital officials noted that this integration of technology and professional expertise allows for more precise and rapid determination of the nature and spread of the disease.
