Italian cities launch major urban renewal projects
Several Italian municipalities have unveiled extensive public‑space regeneration schemes. In Piacenza, the Arcadis‑prepared design for the new Piazza Cittadella creates an urban forest with 30 trees, about 100 shrubs and over 2,000 herbaceous plants, restores pedestrian access and places Palazzo Farnese at the centre of a green, barrier‑free square.
In Castelmaggiore the Palatenda sports centre has had its long‑neglected dressing rooms fully refurbished after €40,000 of works, while a new sports hall for basketball and volleyball is set to begin with an €800,000 investment.
Livorno’s historic Darsena Vecchia and Scali Cialdini have been restyled with a €1.7 million PNRR‑funded programme that adds photovoltaic panels, tactile pathways and accessible facilities, preserving the traditional fishing activity on the waterfront.
The “Via dei Torchi e dei Mulini” trail linking Domodossola and Villadossola was reopened on 27 June after a community‑led restoration supported by local authorities and the Lions Club.
In Castelnovo Monti, the Palazzo Ducale is entering a co‑design phase that invites third‑sector groups to propose cultural, educational and social uses for the restored building.
Finally, Pesaro’s Teatro Rossini received a €37 000 municipal grant to restore the lower tiers of its first‑order boxes, complementing a larger €385 000 roof refurbishment ahead of the 2026 Rossini Opera Festival.
