Livorno's Fanale Maggiore: A historic Tuscan lighthouse

The Fanale Maggiore in Livorno is recognized as one of the most historically and architecturally significant lighthouses in the Tuscany region. Located at the southern entrance of the port within the Azimut Benetti shipyard area, the structure is among Italy’s oldest maritime signaling landmarks.

Originally constructed between 1303 and 1305 by the Republic of Pisa under the design of architect and sculptor Giovanni Pisano, the lighthouse served as a symbol of political and maritime rebirth following the Battle of Meloria. Its cultural impact is evidenced by mentions in the works of Dante Alighieri and Francesco Petrarca, and it famously served as an outdoor laboratory for Galileo Galilei during his scientific experiments. Although the original structure was destroyed by retreating German troops in 1944 during World War II, it has since been faithfully reconstructed.
