Livorno's new hospital plan faces criticism over delays and financing

The regional government of Tuscany presented the definitive project for a new hospital in Livorno, with Mayor Salvetti and President Giani emphasizing its importance. The plan, originally promised in 2019 to be completed within the mayor’s term, has been repeatedly delayed; the latest estimate, provided by an artificial‑intelligence model, predicts a fifteen‑year construction period.

The Lega party has filed an interpellation, accusing the regional administration of using the project as political showmanship and questioning the financing. The municipality plans to fund the construction through debt with INAIL, while regional funds that were earmarked for Livorno's health services appear unaccounted for. Critics also point to the deteriorating condition of other hospitals in the province, such as those in Piombino, Elba and Cecina, and warn that the long timeline leaves residents to rely on inadequate existing facilities.
