Livraria Lello hits record 120,000 book sales in a single month

Livraria Lello has achieved a historic milestone by selling over 120,000 books in a single month during August, the highest figure in the institution's 120-year history. This record was reached without a corresponding increase in the total number of visitors, indicating a significant shift in consumer behavior.

Data shows that more than 80% of visitors now purchase at least one book, a substantial increase from less than 10% a decade ago. This conversion is driven by a business strategy centered on a ‘ticket-voucher’ model, where the entry fee is fully deductible from a book purchase. This approach aims to transform casual visitors into active readers.

The bookstore currently sells approximately 4,000 copies daily. The increased scale has allowed the establishment to invest in its own publishing, expand multilingual offerings, and develop specialized projects, such as the Manifesto Library in partnership with the Service95 Book Club and installations by artists like Ai Weiwei.
