Livret A savings face inflation erosion and account closure risks

Savings held in the Livret A, a popular French savings account, are facing challenges regarding both real value and account security. Due to inflation, the purchasing power of money deposited in 2020 has eroded significantly; for instance, 100 euros from 2020 is equivalent to only 96 euros today in real terms. While the nominal balance on statements continues to rise due to interest, the cumulative increase in prices has outpaced the interest rates provided.

In a separate incident highlighting administrative risks, a resident of Tours discovered that his Livret A, which had been open since 1975, was closed by his bank without prior warning. The bank classified the account as inactive and transferred approximately 27,000 euros to the Caisse des Dépôts. This case raises concerns regarding bank notification obligations and the management of inactive accounts.
