Livret A savings show significant regional disparities in France
The Livret A remains the most popular savings vehicle in France, with an 83% ownership rate and approximately 58 million accounts open. While the national average balance for the account reached 7,554 euros in 2026, significant regional disparities exist.
Rural departments in the Massif Central lead in average savings, with Lozère recording the highest average of 9,535 euros, followed by Haute-Loire and Aveyron. In contrast, urban areas like Seine-Saint-Denis show much lower averages, at 4,448 euros.
For long-term savings, such as for children, the Livret A is noted for its accessibility and lack of risk, though its yield may decrease as inflation falls. Other options like the Plan d'Épargne Logement (PEL) offer guaranteed rates but face different tax implications and commitment requirements.
