Lizzie Borden case inspires musical productions and historical debate
The historical case of Lizzie Borden, involving the 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts, continues to inspire various artistic interpretations. A production titled ‘Bury the Hatchet’ by the UK-based Out of the Forest Theatre Company is a folk meta jukebox musical that explores the myths and legends surrounding the case. The play uses a mix of traditional murder ballads, 60s soul, and modern rock to examine how gossip and news transform into legend.
Discussions regarding the portrayal of Borden have also emerged following the Netflix series ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’. Critics note that the series omits significant details regarding Borden’s actual character and community involvement. In reality, Borden was an active member of the local community, participating in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, teaching Sunday school, and volunteering for various charitable organizations and hospital boards. Additionally, while the series depicts a strained relationship between Lizzie and her sister Emma, historical records suggest the two were close and lived together for much of their lives.
