Lizzie Borden murder mystery remains a subject of debate

The 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts, remain one of America’s most enduring mysteries. Lizzie Borden, the daughter of Andrew Borden, was arrested and tried for the brutal killings but was ultimately acquitted in 1893.

The case gained massive national attention due to the sensational nature of the crime and the growing power of the press at the time. Modern interpretations of the event continue through media, such as the Netflix series ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’.

Cast members of the Netflix production have shared perspectives on the historical ambiguity. Actor Charlie Hunnam, who portrays Andrew Borden, suggested that while the evidence might suggest responsibility, the crime was never proven in court and could have been a ‘crime of passion’ stemming from an oppressive household. Actress Ella Beatty, who plays Lizzie, noted that while the show posits a stance of guilt, the narrative focuses more on the motivations behind the potential crime rather than just the verdict.
