Ljubljana Mayor opposes renaming street near Israeli embassy

Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković has expressed opposition to a proposal by the Movement for Palestinian Rights to rename Dimičeva Street to Palestinian Street. The street is the site of the recently opened Israeli embassy.

Janković stated that renaming streets is rare in Ljubljana due to the significant administrative burden placed on residents, such as the need to update all official documents. Instead, he suggested that a nearby park could potentially be renamed, perhaps to a ‘Park of Palestinian Children’.

The formal proposal was submitted to the Ljubljana City Municipality commission, which has indicated that the request requires further supplementation. The movement initiated the proposal as a sign of solidarity with Palestinians and in response to the opening of the Israeli embassy, which they view as strengthening ties with Israel.

The opening of the embassy was previously marked by a protest organized by the student group Iskra, which reportedly drew more than 5,000 participants.
