Ljubljana restores vandalized stone spheres at Triple Bridge
The iconic stone spheres of Ljubljana’s Triple Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, have been returned to their original positions following an act of vandalism.
In mid-August, two stone spheres were stolen and subsequently recovered from the bottom of the Ljubljanica River by firefighters during a specialized diving operation. Following their recovery, the spheres were cleaned and restored by the Conservation-Restoration Center ŠČIT, a specialized department of the Ljubljana City Museum and Gallery.
In addition to replacing the stolen spheres, authorities also reinforced the bases of three other spheres that had become loose. The Triple Bridge, which includes the central bridge built in 1842 and two pedestrian bridges added by architect Jože Plečnik between 1929 and 1932, has been part of the UNESCO list since 2021.
