Germany driver's license exchange deadline approaches

Drivers in Germany must adhere to a phased schedule for exchanging older driving licenses for new, EU-compliant credit card formats. This mandatory transition is driven by the third EU Driving License Directive, which aims to standardize documents across the European Union and enhance security against forgery through centralized databases.

The next major deadline is January 19, 2027, which applies to card-based licenses issued between 2002 and 2004. For those holding paper licenses issued before December 31, 1998, the deadline depends on the holder's birth year, though individuals born before 1953 have until January 19, 2033, to complete the exchange.

New EU licenses will be valid for 15 years to ensure that photographs and security features remain current. While the physical document must be updated, the driving privilege itself does not expire, and no new driving tests are required. Failure to comply with the exchange deadlines constitutes an administrative offense and may result in fines.
