LKAB advances green mining with new plant and electric trucks

LKAB, Europe’s largest iron ore producer, is advancing its green transition through significant infrastructure and technology upgrades at its Malmberget mine in Sweden.

The company has begun pouring the foundation for a new concentration plant in Malmberget. Designed to replace a facility in use since 1953, the new plant will increase capacity by approximately 7–8 million tons per year, reaching a total capacity of 25 million tons of raw ore annually. The facility is also being prepared to handle apatite ore for the future production of phosphorus and rare earth metals.

In tandem with infrastructure developments, LKAB has integrated heavy-duty electric mining trucks manufactured by Scania into regular production at depths of up to 1,250 meters. These 120-ton vehicles have already completed over 1,500 trips and transported more than 100,000 tons of iron ore. The electric fleet offers several operational advantages, including a reduction in local exhaust emissions, lower heat output, and decreased noise pollution compared to traditional diesel engines.
