Llanes Fishermen's Guild wins Asturias Exemplary Village Prize

The Cofradía de Pescadores Santa Ana de Llanes has been awarded the 2026 Asturias Exemplary Village Prize (Premio al Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias). The award, presented by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, recognized the guild for its commitment to sustainability, innovation, solidarity, and the preservation of fishing culture.

The guild has deep historical roots, originating from the Cofradía de Mareantes de San Nicolás around 1350. It played a vital role in the regional economy through whaling between the 14th and 17th centuries. Historically, the organization provided social and religious support, assisting widows, orphans, and shipwrecked sailors, while also funding local festivities and religious services.

Confirmed by the Catholic Monarchs in 1480, the guild established its chapel in the Cimadevilla neighborhood of Llanes. Following the decline of whaling in the 18th and 19th centuries, the group transitioned to artisanal fishing and maritime trade, maintaining a significant presence in the Asturias fishing industry through the early 20th century.
