Llanwrtyd Wells hosts 40th World Bog Snorkeling Championships

The World Bog Snorkeling Championships celebrated its 40th anniversary in the rural Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells. Participants compete to traverse a peat bog in the shortest time possible using only a snorkel and fins.

Strict rules govern the event: competitors must breathe solely through a snorkel and are prohibited from using standard swimming strokes, with the “doggy paddle” being the only permitted method. The competition was originally conceived as a way to attract tourists to the town and has since evolved into an international tradition.

Race judge June Duncan noted that the idea originated during a conversation at a local bar regarding how to bring more visitors to the area. While the event is highly difficult due to the nature of the bog, many participants join primarily for the unique experience and atmosphere.
