Llíber urban project challenged over water scarcity concerns
In Spain, the Sumar-Compromís parliamentary group has formally requested that the Spanish Government urge the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation (CHJ) to revoke a permit for a large-scale urban development project in Llíber. The project, which involves the construction of 488 villas with swimming pools in the Muntanya Llarga area, is being challenged as “unfeasible, unsustainable, and unnecessary” due to a critical lack of water resources.
During recent judicial proceedings, the developer VAPF and the Llíber City Council reportedly acknowledged that a well promised in 2023 lacks water and does not hold the necessary CHJ concession. Lawmakers are questioning what measures will be taken to protect the local population's water supply amidst ongoing drought conditions and to prevent what they describe as an “environmental attack.”
