Ülle Madise elected President of Estonia

The Estonian Parliament, known as the Riigikogu, has elected Ülle Madise as the country’s next president. Madise, a 51-year-old lawyer and the current Chancellor of Justice, secured 71 votes in a secret ballot, surpassing the required two-thirds majority of 68 votes. She was the sole candidate in the election.

Madise will succeed Alar Karis, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek a second term. She is set to take office on October 12, 2026, for a five-year mandate. Her election makes her the second woman to hold the presidency in Estonia, following Kersti Kaljulaid.

In her address to the Riigikogu, Madise emphasized the importance of solidarity and described Estonia as a key security point for Europe and the Western world. Her candidacy received broad support from both governing and opposition parties, including the Reform Party, Eesti 200, the Social Democrats, and Isamaa.
