Ülle Madise presidential candidacy highlights Estonian political divide

The presidential candidacy of Justice Chancellor Ülle Madise has highlighted significant political divisions within Estonia. According to a poll conducted by Norstat Estonia for the Institute of Social Research, 43 percent of respondents support her election as president, while 36 percent do not support it, and 21 percent remained undecided.

Support for Madise varies significantly across political lines. She enjoys strong backing from the Reform Party (83 percent), the Conservative and Right-wing Party (69 percent), and the Social Democratic Party (69 percent), as well as 57 percent of Isamaa voters. Conversely, she faces opposition from 79 percent of Conservative People's Party of Estonia (EKRE) voters and 50 percent of Center Party voters.

Madise is currently viewed as the only candidate likely to secure the necessary votes in the Riigikogu, though observers suggest her presidency may reflect a liberal leaning that could deepen the divide between conservative and liberal segments of the population.
