Lleida calls for safer bike lanes amid rising electric scooter accidents

In Lleida, Spain, data show an electric scooter‑related accident occurs roughly every two days, resulting in injuries, family concerns and occasional fatalities. The frequency of these incidents has prompted local residents and officials to demand a serious debate on the city’s mobility infrastructure.

The political group Junts has submitted formal allegations to the municipal urban plan (POUM), urging the city to replace fragmented bike lanes with a continuous, well‑connected network that links neighborhoods, schools, university campuses, the Hospital Arnau de Vilanova, industrial zones and other key facilities. The aim is to ensure that cyclists, scooter users and pedestrians can share the streets safely.

The call highlights that existing bike lanes were built before the surge of electric scooters, leading to gaps, unsafe maneuvers and conflicts with parked vehicles. Advocates argue that a coherent active‑mobility framework is essential for a truly sustainable city.
