Lleida court begins trial in Carreteras corruption case

The trial regarding the Carreteras case, a derivative of the Boreas corruption investigation in Lleida, has commenced at the Audiència de Lleida. The proceedings are scheduled to continue until September 25.

During the initial sessions, an inspector from the Mossos d'Esquadra's Anti-Corruption Unit testified that investigations revealed a relationship between the former head of Roads for the Generalitat in Lleida, Jordi Benet, and a construction company that “exceeded cordiality.”

Investigators reported discovering a “very close and intimate” relationship between Benet and the administrator of MJ Gruas through wiretaps conducted in 2016. Evidence presented includes high-end restaurant meals, Christmas gifts, and weekend invitations to a private residence in Vall d'Aran, which investigators claim went beyond standard professional courtesy. The prosecution alleges that Benet used his position, which included authority over contracts and certifications, to benefit the company.
