Lleida faces rapid population aging through 2040

Projections from the INE and an analysis by the Adecco Foundation indicate that the Lleida region will experience significant demographic shifts between 2030 and 2040. During this decade, the number of residents over the age of 64 is expected to increase by 22.3%, reaching approximately 127,036 people. In contrast, the working-age population (ages 16 to 64) is projected to grow by only 2.2%, adding 7,031 inhabitants.

By 2040, nearly one in four residents in the Lleida demarcation—approximately 24.6%—will be over the age of 64. This trend mirrors broader patterns across Catalonia, where the elderly population is also expected to rise significantly. The report warns that this aging trend could exacerbate difficulties in filling job vacancies and ensuring generational replacement. To address these challenges, the Adecco Foundation suggests focusing on retaining senior talent and adapting training to better integrate older workers into the labor market.
