Lleida introduces personal assistants for inclusive summer programs

The Lleida City Council has introduced new resources into its municipal summer programs to promote greater inclusivity for children and young people with disabilities. As part of a pilot program within the ‘Viu l’Estiu 2026’ initiative, the city has incorporated the role of personal assistants to ensure participants can engage in recreational, educational, and sporting activities with improved autonomy, well-being, and safety.

The program has provided 4,187 places for summer activities. To support this, 15 specialized monitors are working in collaboration with local entities. During the pilot phase, the council provided personalized attention to 50 families, conducting individual interviews to determine specific support needs. While 15 children required dedicated accompaniment from a monitor, others were supported by general staff receiving specialized guidance. The initiative involves coordinated follow-ups between families, participants, and activity leaders to adapt resources to evolving needs throughout the summer.
