Lleida Ponent prison death involves Albanian national

An Albanian national, identified by the initials J. B., was found dead at the Lleida Ponent prison in Catalonia, Spain. Authorities suspect the individual committed suicide after being found hanging in the shower area.

Prison staff attempted resuscitation, but medical services and emergency teams confirmed the death at the scene. According to the Department of Justice, the prisoner was not part of the suicide prevention protocol. The incident has raised concerns among the approximately 50 Albanian citizens held at the facility, who have reported issues regarding judicial delays, deportation procedures, and a lack of contact with Albanian diplomatic representatives.

The union SICAP-FEPOL has criticized the management of the Catalan penitentiary system, citing staff shortages and security issues. The union has called for the resignation of the Director General of Penitentiary Affairs, Domingo Estepa Camacho.
