Lleida researchers study migrant worker vulnerability during COVID-19
Researchers from the Biomedical Research Institute of Lleida (IRBLleida) and the University of Lleida have led a case study examining the experiences of migrant agricultural workers in Lleida, Spain, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study, published in ‘The Lancet’ as part of the NUS–Lancet PRIME Commission, highlights how precarious housing, administrative status, and difficulties with residency registration increased the vulnerability of this group and hindered their access to healthcare and social protection.
The research is part of a larger international project involving 819 participants from 20 countries. It proposes a new model for preparing for future health emergencies, emphasizing that more equitable vaccine distribution could save millions of lives. Simulations suggest that rapid vaccine development could reduce mortality by 59%, particularly if doses are distributed based on population needs rather than purchasing power.
