Lleida to tender cleaning works for Les Arenes and Torrent Mitger streams
The Lleida City Council will soon tender works for the clearing and cleaning of two urban sections: the Les Arenes stream bed and the Torrent Mitger. The project aims to preserve hydraulic capacity by removing invasive species, such as reeds and shrubs, which could otherwise obstruct underground sections during heavy flooding.
For the Torrent Mitger, work will occur on the urban stretch between the B-40 and Blanca de Centelles street. This involves excavating and removing rhizomatic material, followed by planting native shrubs to naturally displace invasive plants. For the Les Arenes stream, the project extends from the Can Petit bridge to the confluence with the Palau stream. In addition to clearing, a biodegradable coconut mesh will be applied to prevent reed growth and support native planting.
The works are funded by a subsidy from the Agència Catalana de l’Aigua, with budgets of €60,814.76 for Torrent Mitger and €63,206.81 for Les Arenes, including VAT. The execution period is expected to last between two and three months. These actions are part of a broader maintenance project to increase the resilience of the city's stream network against adverse weather events.
