LLM capabilities and the limits of machine consciousness

Discussions regarding Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly focusing on the distinction between human consciousness and machine processing. Some perspectives argue that applying human morality to AI is a category error, as LLMs lack the biological imperatives—such as physical vulnerability, metabolic urgency, and the risk of death—that drive human evolutionary consciousness and ethical frameworks.

In practical applications, experiments with LLM-driven software development are testing the limits of generative AI. One ongoing project involves using LLM agents, specifically Claude Code, to build a professional visual modeling application comprising approximately 137,000 lines of C++ code. Preliminary findings from such high-scale coding experiments suggest that while LLMs can generate significant portions of code and documentation, they are currently unable to replace human engineers in complex, professional-grade software architecture tasks.
