Llopat railway crossing malfunctions for two years
Residents of Llopat village in the Kumanovo municipality are facing significant safety risks due to a malfunctioning railway crossing on the Kumanovo-Gjilan regional road. The crossing, which intersects with the Corridor 8 railway line heading toward Bulgaria, has lacked functioning ramps, audio signals, and lights for approximately two years.
Local officials and residents report that the failure endangers approximately 3,000 inhabitants in Llopat, as well as commuters and students traveling between villages and Kumanovo. The village head, Bejtullah Tefiku, noted that while previous attempts were made to repair the system using equipment from Croatia, the issues have resurfaced in recent months. The public enterprise ‘Macedonian Railways – Infrastructure’ has indicated that a digital synchronization of the signaling system is required.
