Lloyd’s Register and Jurong Port update cargo securing guidelines

Lloyd’s Register and Jurong Port have released revised Best Practice Guidelines for the stowage and securing of steel and general cargoes. The updated framework prioritizes personnel safety while aiming to reduce cargo damage and improve the efficiency of discharge operations within global supply chains.

The new guidance addresses industry-wide challenges such as poor stowage, inadequate securing arrangements, and inconsistent cargo presentation, which frequently lead to operational delays and safety incidents. It provides practical recommendations for a wide range of stakeholders, including cargo owners, shippers, vessel operators, stevedores, and terminal operators.

The review focused on practical aspects of transporting and discharging general cargo, covering areas such as cargo accessibility, segregation, dunnage arrangements, bundling methods, and lashing practices. These guidelines were assessed against international regulations, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code) and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.
