Lloyd’s Register launches maritime framework for 3D model approval

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has released the maritime industry’s first dedicated guidance for utilizing digital 3D models to support classification approval. The new framework, titled ‘LR-GN-066 Guidance Notes for Digital 3D Models’, provides shipyards, designers, and owners with a structured method to use intelligent 3D models instead of traditional 2D plans during early-stage structural plan approval.

The guidance addresses a gap in the industry, where standards for 2D plans are well-established but comparable 3D model guidance has been lacking. The framework covers essential technical aspects, including file formats, model organization, metadata requirements, levels of structural detail, revision control, and submission requirements. By integrating existing digital assets from design and manufacturing workflows into the approval process, the framework aims to reduce duplication and improve consistency between design, production, and approval.
