Lloyd’s Register launches RouteFlex for containership stowage

Lloyd’s Register has launched LR RouteFlex, a new application designed to assist containership operators in managing cargo capacity and operational flexibility. The tool addresses increasing uncertainties in container shipping caused by extreme weather, geopolitical events, port congestion, and unexpected route diversions.

Unlike traditional stowage optimisation, which focuses on maximizing capacity for fixed routes, LR RouteFlex utilizes metocean datasets to allow for dynamic, route-based optimisation. This enables operators to optimize stowage stack by stack and leg by leg. The application includes route deviation capabilities to recalculate weather-dependent factors following a diversion, as well as route splitting functionality to optimize individual voyage legs independently.

Nick Gross, Global Containerships Segment Director at Lloyd’s Register, noted that optimal stowage now requires the ability to adapt safely when conditions change. The tool aims to help operators make informed decisions and maintain vessel utilization while keeping cargo within safe operational limits during complex trading patterns.
