Lloyd’s Register study warns subsea pipeline design impacts integrity

A study by Lloyd’s Register (LR), commissioned by the Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority (Havtil), warns that early design decisions and the qualification of subsea connectors are critical to the long-term integrity of subsea pipelines.

The report provides an updated industry experience base for assessing the performance of welded and mechanical connectors used in subsea systems. These components are essential for offshore energy production, linking fields to processing and export infrastructure in demanding environments. LR concluded that design-stage decisions directly influence failure risks throughout an asset's operational life.

The findings arrive as Norway expands offshore activity, including the APA 2026 licensing round which includes 70 new blocks for exploration to maintain energy supplies to Europe. Consequently, regulators are increasing their focus on the structural safety of critical subsea infrastructure.
