Lluís Bonet i Armengol, former Sagrada Família rector, dies at 95
Lluís Bonet i Armengol, the priest who served as the rector of the Sagrada Família for 25 years (1993–2018), has passed away at the age of 95. Born in Barcelona in 1931, he was a central figure in the history of the temple, witnessing its transformation and participating in key milestones, such as the dedication of the main nave by Pope Benedict XVI, which granted the temple the title of minor basilica.
Bonet was also the primary promoter and vice-postulator for the beatification cause of architect Antoni Gaudí, a process he initiated in 2000. His connection to the site was familial; he was the son of architect Lluís Bonet i Garí, a disciple of Gaudí who helped continue the temple's construction after the Civil War.
In accordance with his wishes, Bonet donated his body to science, meaning no funeral will be held. However, a diocesan and parochial ceremony is expected to take place in September.
