LMU Munich considers tuition fees for international students
Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich is evaluating the introduction of tuition fees for students from countries outside the European Union. A working group is currently examining the structure of these potential fees, including possible exemptions, scholarships, and the specific degree programs that would be affected.
According to student representatives, proposed costs could reach up to 4,000 euros per semester for bachelor's programs and up to 8,000 euros per semester for master's programs, with potentially higher costs for doctoral candidates. While the university has not confirmed these specific figures, it is following a model similar to the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which began charging non-EU students in the 2024/25 winter semester to fund teaching improvements and infrastructure.
The proposal has met with immediate resistance. The student union has launched a campaign and a petition against the fees, citing concerns over social consequences and accessibility.
