LNG Canada consortium approves Phase 2 expansion in British Columbia

The LNG Canada consortium, led by Shell, has reached a final investment decision to proceed with Phase 2 of its liquefied natural gas project in Kitimat, British Columbia. This expansion is expected to double the facility's annual production capacity from 14 million tonnes to 28 million tonnes.

The Canadian government estimates the expansion will attract approximately 33 billion Canadian dollars in private investment. The project is expected to create up to 4,000 construction jobs during peak periods, followed by roughly 90 permanent positions and 150 contractor roles once operational.

Shell holds a 40% stake in the consortium, which also includes Petronas (25%), PetroChina (15%), Mitsubishi Corporation (15%), and Korea Gas Corp (5%). The expansion will add two new processing trains, additional storage tanks, and a new loading berth. Commercial operations for the second phase are projected to begin in the early 2030s, targeting energy markets in Asia.
