LNG Canada Phase 2 receives limited notice to proceed

The consortium behind the LNG Canada export facility in Kitimat has issued a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) to its engineering‑construction joint venture, allowing early‑stage planning for a proposed Phase 2 expansion. The JGC‑Fluor partnership, which delivered Phase 1, will begin selected activities while LNG Canada evaluates a final investment decision. Phase 2 aims to double the plant’s output from about 14 million tonnes per year to roughly 28 million tonnes, expanding Canada’s liquefied natural gas exports.

South Korea has pledged to import at least 1.4 million tonnes of LNG per year from the expanded facility for more than three decades, positioning the country as a key long‑term buyer. The Canadian federal government has listed the project as a national‑importance resource and is exploring fast‑track options to support the investment decision. Stakeholders include Shell, Petronas, PetroChina and Mitsubishi, which hold significant equity in the venture.
